Designing A Tone

Design is very important. It can control and determine the way we view a product. If a design seems lazy, we with associate a person or the product with laziness. But if a design is great, it can perfectly depict and represent a message just by how the design looks. This is why design should thoroughly and strategically planned before designing anything, whether it be the label for a product, a magazine article, or even a resume for a job.

Less Is More
The layout for this magazine is very visually pleasing. The font is very fitting for the photo that follows on the next page. Both come off to be very sophisticated fancy in a way. The size of the S in “Siren Call” is instantly eye catching. The way that the next wraps around and fits perfectly around the large letter is really clean and creates a visually tight and neat design. The text is consistent and plays off of the photo. They both are black and white, which seems classy and fitting for the theme of the magazine article. The layout is simple yet very gratifying and interesting to look at. There is not much to take in while looking at the article, but the white surrounding the black letters is almost smothering the text in a great way. The minimalist design is great and is more eye catching than any colors or extravagant design could be. This layout just perfectly fits with the accompanying picture, and is a great example of how to set a tone and feeling through design.
Standing Out From The Pack
Finding the proper effective layout for a resume can be a hard task. The resume should be creative and show a bit of personality, but at the same time maintain a level of professionalism. Most people will do a basic layout and list why they should have the job, so it is important for a resume to be eye catching, and to stand out from the rest. This resume does just that. It is simple, yet creative. The design is not too distracting from the words on the page, which is ideal for an effective resume. The text is very appropriate for this resume, because it stands out but at the same time is easy to read and is not at all overwhelming. The way that the contact info fills in the room leading up to her last name is very impactful and exemplifies great organization. The only negative thing about the resume is that the text is slanted. This could make it difficult for a possible employer to read, and they might not even want to bother to read it. It is unlikely for this resume because it shows a lot of time and thought was put into making it, so any worthwhile employer will recognize this and appreciate it.

It is clear that these two pieces were strategically planned out when it comes to design, and it payed off. The tone was set for each piece before any words were even read, and that the power of what design can do. Both were very clean and organized, which shows elegance and structure in both pieces of work.
